Tips and Recipes

When you have lunch and your beer is the healthiest item on your menu!!!

I typically ask friends what they have for lunch and truly I get a lot of variations! Some take their lunch due to diets or food issues, some order right off the menu and describe them as “generous” portions! (And they wonder why they are soooo sleepy!) With the pandemic keeping us at home, some find something in the fridge to make a sandwich or salad! When I asked my friend what he had for lunch he said “a brawn meat (commercially known as Head Cheese- hog head meat that is jellied) sandwich and a beer! Oh Yum!

When is comes to lunch, sandwiches are popular at home and in restaurants. However, the meat in sandwiches usually come from “deli meat”. Or, there are other options (pre-packaged meat) in the refrigerated case. I call these “mystery” meats. I don’t eat these nor recommend them! To eat healthy meat sandwiches, I prefer it to come directly from the source. So, either chicken, turkey, pig or beef would be my options. It’s easy to cook or rotisserie chicken, ham and turkey breast in our Deluxe Air Fryer. One thing to remember, “mystery” meat has many additives that you may not like if you knew what the additives are and your body does not know what to do with them! It’s like someone offering you to taste a different kind of meat and saying “it taste like chicken”! Well, just give me the chicken!!!

Eating healthy is easier to do than you think! The five food groups are easy to remember. This chart is like the one you are taught from in elementary school.

The major thing that is not on this chart is “food additives”. These are allowed and added by the manufacturers which mainly help the food have a longer shelf life. So, when you are looking to purchase food, check to see if you can pronounce the listed ingredients or even know what the ingredients are! If you can not do either, then put it back on the shelf.

When shopping for groceries, do you get most of your items from the produce department or the grocery isle? Think about that. Fresh equals healthier!

Next, you need to consider portion control. For example, how much are you eating at each meal. The easiest to remember is the portion of protein should be no more than 3-4 ounces. Everything else should be about the size of your fist! And you will have room for dessert!!!

Are you unsure about how to choose fresh produce and store it? Well there is an app for that on your iPhone. It’s “Harvest”! It is very handy and even tells you what produce is “in season” in your area! It also tell’s you how to select the best of the produce and how to store it. It also list pesticide levels. Check it out!
